RBI Highlights Role of AI in Banking Fraud Prevention and Credit Access
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in improving fraud prevention, strengthening risk management and expanding access to credit in the banking sector.
RBI Deputy Governor Shirish Chandra Murmu emphasised that AI can support banks in improving operational efficiency and making financial services more accessible, while also requiring appropriate governance and risk controls.
AI is increasingly being adopted by banks for applications such as fraud detection, transaction monitoring, customer service, credit assessment and risk analysis. By analysing large volumes of financial data, AI systems can identify unusual patterns and support faster decision-making.
Fraud prevention is one of the key areas where AI can provide significant value. Advanced analytics can help banks detect suspicious transactions, identify emerging fraud patterns and strengthen monitoring mechanisms.
In credit management, AI-based models can support improved borrower assessment by analysing multiple data points and identifying potential risks. This can help banks expand responsible lending while improving credit quality.
AI can also contribute to financial inclusion by enabling more efficient assessment of customers who may have limited traditional credit histories. Data-driven approaches can help institutions develop more personalised financial solutions for underserved segments.
However, the use of AI in banking also creates new risks. Banks need strong frameworks to manage issues related to data quality, model accuracy, cybersecurity, privacy and transparency of automated decisions.
Model risk management is becoming increasingly important as AI systems influence critical banking decisions. Financial institutions need regular validation, monitoring and human oversight to ensure that AI outputs remain reliable and fair.
Data governance is another key requirement. AI systems depend on accurate and secure data, making effective data management practices essential for maintaining trust and regulatory compliance.
Cybersecurity risks are also becoming more complex as banks adopt advanced technologies. Institutions need to strengthen controls against data manipulation, unauthorised access and technology-related disruptions.
For banks, successful AI adoption requires a balanced approach that combines innovation with responsible governance. Technology should enhance decision-making while ensuring customer protection and financial stability.
The RBI’s focus reflects the broader transformation of the banking sector, where AI is becoming an important tool for improving efficiency, managing risks and expanding access to financial services.
As AI adoption increases, banks that build strong technology capabilities along with robust governance frameworks will be better positioned to use artificial intelligence responsibly and effectively.
