RBI Deputy Governor Urges Banks to Improve Retail Foreign Exchange Services

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor has called on banks to strengthen retail foreign exchange services, highlighting the need for improved customer experience, greater transparency and more efficient delivery of forex-related services.

The push comes as increasing international travel, overseas education, remittances and global business activity are driving greater demand for retail foreign exchange solutions in India.

Retail forex services cover a range of activities including foreign currency exchange, international remittances, travel-related payments and other cross-border financial transactions. As more individuals participate in global economic activities, expectations around speed, convenience and pricing transparency are increasing.

Banks have traditionally provided forex services through branches and authorised dealer networks. However, changing customer preferences and digital adoption are creating demand for faster and more accessible solutions.

Digital platforms can help banks improve forex service delivery through online applications, real-time exchange rate information, simplified documentation and faster processing. However, technology adoption must be supported by strong cybersecurity and compliance controls.

Foreign exchange operations involve multiple risks, including currency risk, operational risk, regulatory compliance risk and transaction monitoring challenges. Banks need robust systems to manage these risks while ensuring smooth customer service.

The expansion of digital forex services also increases the importance of anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) frameworks. Banks must maintain effective controls to identify suspicious transactions and comply with regulatory requirements.

For banks, improving retail forex services represents an opportunity to strengthen customer relationships and expand fee-based businesses. Better service quality can also help financial institutions compete with fintech platforms offering cross-border payment solutions.

Artificial intelligence and data analytics can support better forex operations by improving fraud detection, customer profiling and transaction monitoring. However, banks must ensure that automated systems are properly governed and validated.

The RBI’s emphasis reflects the broader transformation of banking services, where customer convenience and operational efficiency are becoming key priorities. Financial institutions are expected to combine technology innovation with strong risk management practices.

As India’s integration with global markets increases, retail foreign exchange services will become an increasingly important part of banking operations. Banks that provide secure, transparent and efficient forex solutions will be better positioned to meet evolving customer needs.
