RBI Cancels Registration of 35 NBFCs for Regulatory Non-Compliance

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the registration certificates of 35 non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) after finding them non-compliant with key regulatory requirements. The action forms part of the regulator’s ongoing efforts to strengthen governance, transparency, and stability in the non-banking financial sector.

According to the RBI, these entities failed to adhere to mandatory provisions under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, including prudential norms, reporting obligations, and operational compliance standards. The cancellation effectively bars the affected companies from conducting NBFC-related financial activities.

The regulator reiterated that NBFCs play a critical role in credit delivery, particularly to underserved segments, but must operate within the prescribed regulatory framework to safeguard depositor and borrower interests. Persistent non-compliance, the RBI said, undermines financial discipline and poses systemic risks.

This move is consistent with the RBI’s intensified supervisory approach toward NBFCs in recent years, especially after episodes of stress in the sector. The central bank has repeatedly emphasised that regulatory tolerance will be limited for entities that fail to meet minimum governance and risk management standards.

Market experts view the cancellation as a signal that the RBI is willing to take firm action to clean up the NBFC ecosystem, even as it supports responsible growth and financial inclusion. The development is expected to encourage better compliance culture across the sector and improve overall confidence in non-bank financial intermediaries.

The RBI continues to urge NBFCs to strengthen internal controls, ensure timely disclosures, and align operations with evolving regulatory expectations.
