MUFG Invests ₹4,300 Crore in Shriram Finance
Japan’s banking major Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) has announced an investment of ₹4,300 crore in Shriram Finance, reinforcing its long-term commitment to India’s fast-growing retail and MSME lending market.
The investment will be made through the preferential allotment of equity shares, enabling MUFG to acquire an additional stake in Shriram Finance. Following the transaction, MUFG’s shareholding in the non-banking financial company is expected to rise significantly, further strengthening the strategic partnership between the two entities.
Shriram Finance, India’s largest retail-focused NBFC, has a strong presence in vehicle finance, MSME loans, personal finance, and rural lending. The company serves a wide customer base across semi-urban and rural regions, segments that continue to witness robust credit demand. The fresh capital infusion is expected to support business expansion, enhance capital adequacy, and fund future growth initiatives.
MUFG said the investment aligns with its strategy to deepen exposure to high-growth emerging markets, particularly India, where rising consumption, infrastructure development, and financial inclusion are driving long-term lending opportunities. The group has been steadily expanding its footprint in India through banking, investment, and partnership-led models.
Shriram Finance management welcomed the investment, stating that MUFG’s continued support underscores confidence in the company’s business model, governance standards, and growth prospects. The partnership is also expected to facilitate knowledge sharing, risk management expertise, and access to global best practices.
The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions. Analysts view the move as a strong endorsement of India’s NBFC sector and Shriram Finance’s leadership position within it.
