PSBs Could Attract Up to ₹30,000 Crore in Foreign Inflows
Public sector banks (PSBs) could attract up to ₹30,000 crore in foreign investment if the permitted foreign investment cap is raised to 49%, according to industry estimates. A higher limit could improve the ability of state-owned banks to access overseas capital and strengthen their capital base, while potentially increasing foreign participation in India’s banking sector.
For PSBs, greater foreign investment could support capital mobilisation, governance improvements, technology adoption and competitive positioning, but a higher ownership ceiling would also require careful attention to regulatory oversight and shareholder concentration. The proposal comes as policymakers consider ways to strengthen the capital position and efficiency of public sector banks while maintaining appropriate safeguards around control, governance and financial stability.
