Canara Bank Signs EPFO MoU
Canara Bank has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to provide a premium payroll package for EPFO employees.
The partnership is aimed at providing employees with customised banking services through Canara Bank’s payroll account offerings. The bank has been expanding such institutional partnerships to provide salary-account services and associated financial benefits to large employee groups.
Canara Bank’s Premium Payroll Package includes features such as zero-balance salary accounts, preferential loan services, overdraft facilities, credit-card benefits and concessions on selected banking services, depending on the applicable salary segment.
The development reflects the growing competition among banks for institutional salary-account relationships. Payroll partnerships can provide banks with access to a large customer base while allowing employees to receive banking services through a structured arrangement.
Salary accounts can also create opportunities for banks to offer additional products such as personal loans, credit cards, insurance, investment services and digital banking solutions.
For Canara Bank, institutional payroll partnerships form part of a broader strategy to expand customer relationships across government bodies and large organisations. The bank has previously entered similar arrangements with entities including the Indian Coast Guard and the Telangana government.
The partnership also highlights the role of employee-focused banking packages in improving customer acquisition and cross-selling opportunities. However, banks need to ensure that additional financial products offered through payroll relationships remain suitable for customers and comply with responsible-selling requirements.
Digital banking will be an important component of such relationships, particularly as employees increasingly expect mobile access to payments, loans, investments and other financial services.
For banks, institutional salary-account arrangements can therefore provide both customer-acquisition opportunities and a platform for building longer-term relationships with salaried customers.
