Deutsche Bank Uses AI to Cut Some Loan Decisions to Minutes

Deutsche Bank is using artificial intelligence (AI) to significantly accelerate decisions on some corporate loans, reducing processing times for smaller businesses from weeks to minutes, according to the bank’s technology chief Marie-Jeanne Deverdun. The AI project went live during the summer and is also reducing some lending decisions for multinational companies from months to weeks.

The development reflects banks’ growing use of AI to improve productivity, automate analysis and reduce the time required for credit decision-making. Deutsche Bank is also preparing for a future in which its AI agents could interact directly with AI agents operated by corporate clients.

However, faster decision-making is accompanied by increased technology and cyber risks. Deverdun identified cyber risk as her number-one priority, highlighting the need for stronger controls as AI becomes more deeply embedded in banking operations.

Deutsche Bank plans to spend more than €2.5 billion on technology between 2026 and 2028. The bank has also developed an internal AI platform called ADA, named after computing pioneer Ada Lovelace, to develop, monitor and control AI agents. The platform enables the bank to oversee agent activity, manage risk and switch between AI models as technology evolves.

The bank’s approach highlights an emerging priority for financial institutions: combining AI-driven efficiency with model governance, cybersecurity, accountability and human oversight. As AI moves into credit decisions and agentic banking, robust controls will become increasingly important to ensure speed does not come at the expense of credit quality or operational resilience.
