SBI Inaugurates Centre of Excellence for Cybersecurity

State Bank of India (SBI) has inaugurated a Centre of Excellence for Cybersecurity, strengthening its focus on protecting banking systems, customer data and digital financial services from evolving cyber threats.

The centre is intended to support cybersecurity research, threat intelligence, capability development and collaboration as the banking sector faces increasingly sophisticated attacks. The initiative reflects the growing importance of specialised cybersecurity capabilities as banks expand digital channels, cloud infrastructure and technology-enabled services.

Cyber risks have become a major concern for financial institutions, with threats ranging from phishing and identity theft to ransomware, malware, account takeovers and attacks targeting critical banking infrastructure. The increasing use of artificial intelligence by both banks and cybercriminals is also creating new challenges for security teams.

For SBI, the centre is expected to strengthen its ability to identify emerging threats and develop appropriate preventive and response measures. It can also contribute to building specialised cybersecurity skills and promoting greater awareness of cyber risks across the banking ecosystem.

The initiative comes as regulators and financial institutions place greater emphasis on cyber resilience, incident preparedness, continuous monitoring and technology risk governance.

For the wider banking industry, SBI’s investment in a dedicated cybersecurity centre highlights the need to treat cyber risk as an enterprise-level concern rather than solely an IT function. Stronger capabilities in threat detection, response and recovery will be increasingly important as digital banking adoption continues to expand.
