SBI Q2 Profit Rises 14%; Cybersecurity Strengthening Underway

State Bank of India (SBI) reported a 14.3% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit to ₹23,038 crore for the quarter ended September 2026, compared with ₹20,160 crore a year earlier. The performance was supported by stronger lending, higher net interest income and lower provisions, although a one-time gain from the sale of a stake in SBI Funds Management also contributed significantly.

SBI’s net interest income rose 14.7% to ₹49,143 crore, while gross advances increased about 18% and deposits grew 12.3%. Domestic net interest margin improved to 3.11%, up 11 basis points from the previous quarter, indicating stronger core lending economics.

Asset quality also improved. The bank’s gross NPA ratio declined to 1.39% from 1.47% in the previous quarter, while net NPAs fell to 0.36% from 0.38%. Gross NPAs stood at ₹72,529 crore, while the provision coverage ratio was 74.43% as of September 30, 2026.

However, cybersecurity has emerged as an important risk-management priority. SBI is strengthening its cybersecurity measures following a suspected incident in which 3,897 customer records were reportedly exposed. The bank is investigating how attackers may have gained access and is working to identify and address vulnerabilities in its systems.

SBI is also working with the wider banking industry on a shared sandbox for testing AI models and identifying potential threats. The initiative comes as cyberattacks become more sophisticated and regulators increase scrutiny of banks’ cybersecurity preparedness.

The results therefore present two important dimensions for risk managers. SBI’s improving asset quality and 16.09% capital adequacy ratio provide a strong financial position, while the reported cyber incident demonstrates that even large, well-capitalised institutions remain exposed to technology and operational risks.

For banks, the key lesson is that financial strength and cyber resilience must advance together. API security, customer-data protection, AI governance, threat detection and continuous vulnerability assessment are increasingly central to banking risk management.
