PNB Customers Allege ₹35 Crore Fraud in Greater Noida

Customers of Punjab National Bank (PNB) in Greater Noida have alleged a financial fraud of around ₹35 crore, prompting the bank to suspend several employees and initiate an internal investigation. The allegations reportedly concern transactions involving customers of the bank’s branches in the area.

According to the report, affected customers have approached authorities after claiming that funds were withdrawn or transferred from their accounts without proper authorisation. The bank has taken preliminary action against employees linked to the branches while investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged irregularities.

The incident highlights potential weaknesses in internal controls, transaction monitoring, employee oversight and fraud-risk management. Banks are required to maintain multiple layers of controls to identify unusual transactions and prevent unauthorised access to customer accounts.

Employee involvement in alleged banking frauds can create particularly significant operational and reputational risks because insiders may have access to customer information, transaction systems or branch-level processes. Strong segregation of duties, maker-checker controls, access monitoring and periodic audits are therefore critical.

The reported case also reinforces the importance of promptly detecting unusual account activity. Advanced transaction-monitoring systems, behavioural analytics and customer alerts can help identify suspicious transactions before losses escalate.

For banks, the episode demonstrates that cybersecurity and fraud risk cannot be addressed solely through technology. People, processes and governance controls must operate together to prevent and detect financial crime.

The investigation and subsequent findings will determine the extent of the alleged losses, accountability and any further regulatory or legal action.
