FinTech: Definition and Significance

FinTech or Financial Technology is a rapidly growing industry that uses technology in the delivery of financial services to make them accessible to the masses. In other words, the use of technology in providing financial services is known as Fintech. In recent years, FinTech has been responsible for many innovations in the financial sector, from mobile transactions to peer-to-peer lending, to the use of robo-advisors and blockchain technologies. The FinTech industry is still relatively new, but it has significantly changed the way we do traditional banking, invest and make payments. It is also playing an important role in the country’s digital economy by increasing digital banking and mobile commerce in India by using new technologies. There are many reasons why FinTech is playing such an important role in India’s digital economy or in the banking sector of India. First, FinTech gives Indians access to financial services in very simple ways that they would not otherwise have. It has emerged as a boon especially for people residing in rural areas and the unbanked population who often do not have access to traditional banking products and services. Secondly, they reduce the cost of financial services as well as saves time. By making it easier and more affordable to send money, make payments or take loans, FinTech companies are helping to make financial services more accessible to all. Our country is facing many challenges along with its large population and growing economy, out of which one of the biggest challenges is financial inclusion, where it is very important to link every citizen with a bank account, in which FinTech is becoming the first choice of every Indian with its simple technologies. Due to its huge population and consumer market, India is an attractive market for many international businesses and if we have to take advantage of this opportunity, then banking facilities have to be provided immediately at the grassroots level so that we can-do seamless banking.

Role of Fintech in Banking Sector

Today the whole world is rapidly getting integrated through new technologies, which has also brought a lot of change in the way of doing business. Digital economy has now become the new mantra of economic growth and development and India is no exception to it. The country is aiming to go digital on a large scale and Fintech is playing a vital role in this transformation. Although Fintech companies are making their mark in every sector of banking but payments is one area where they have done a remarkable job.

India has a large number of unbanked population and cash is still the main mode of payment. This scenario is changing rapidly with the advent of Fintech companies providing digital payment solutions. These solutions are not only convenient but also secure and are helping in promoting financial inclusion which has been a priority of the government and the banking sector. Wider access to credit is another area where they are playing a very important role. There are many small businesses in India that find it difficult to get access to financing through traditional banking. Fintech companies are coming up with innovative loan products that cater to the specific needs of these businesses. These products are not only helping businesses to grow but also creating jobs which the banking sector is benefiting from by serving them at a lower cost. Investment management is another area where fintech is making its presence felt. In India, most people still invest in physical assets like gold and real estate. But with the help of fintech, people can now invest in financial assets like stocks, mutual funds, and ETFs (exchange-traded funds).

The traditional function of the banking sector was to pool the deposits from the people and provide loan assistance to the needy sector, for which the customer has to come to the bank branch. But now with the arrival of Fintech companies in the banking sector, any person can now avail all the facilities sitting at home with the help of his mobile banking, internet banking and UPI. The second biggest benefit is the reduction of crowd in bank branches because people who are comfortable using technology do not come to the bank now, which also saves their time and the bank can focus on its other important tasks like compliance and marketing.

The level of providing customer services by the Financial Sectors has also improved substantially, thanks to these Fintech companies. These companies, along with the traditional banking sector, have brought about a revolutionary change in the entire financial sector, whether it is payment or lending. Today, if the traditional banking sector has to survive in the market, then they have to make a lot of improvements in the way they deal with the customers and way of providing services. As a result, today every government bank is showing interest in adopting new technologies along with private sector banks through their mobile banking apps and internet banking.

Challenges for Fintech in India

The Fintech industry in India is currently facing several challenges that are hindering its growth. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of good quality and reliable data. This is one of the biggest problems which FinTech are facing because a reliable data is essential for the development of new financial products and services. Without access to reliable data, these companies are helpless when it comes to innovation. The Fintech sector operates on the basis of data provided by traditional banks and there is no doubt that our banking sector is still lagging behind in providing accurate data. As per the instructions of RBI and Government of India, the banking sector has started data cleansing on a war footing but there is still a lot of work to be done. Another problem faced by Fintech companies in India is the slow adoption of new technologies by traditional financial institutions. Many of these banking institutions are still using old systems and are resistant to change. This makes it difficult for Fintech companies to partner with them and grow their business. Another challenge for fintech companies is the high cost of customer acquisition. Due to the low penetration of financial services in the country, fintech companies often have to spend a lot of money on marketing and advertising to reach potential customers. Despite all these challenges, the Indian fintech industry still has a lot of potential for growth. With the right policies and regulations, India can become a leading global player in this sector as the success of UPI has shown.
