India sets new climate targets for 2035

The Union Cabinet has approved India’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets for 2031–2035, to be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

India aims to reduce emissions intensity of GDP by 47% from 2005 levels by 2035. It has also raised the target for non-fossil fuel-based power capacity to 60%, surpassing its earlier 2030 goal ahead of schedule.

Additionally, the country plans to expand its carbon sink to 35–40 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through increased forest and tree cover. These commitments reflect India’s strengthening role in global climate action.
