India becomes world’s third-largest renewable energy market

India has emerged as the third-largest renewable energy market globally in 2025, after China and the United States, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency.

The country added nearly 45 GW of renewable capacity during the year, taking total installed capacity to 250.5 GW from 175.9 GW in 2023. Solar energy led the expansion with about 37 GW of additions, while wind capacity rose by 6.3 GW. Hydropower and pumped storage capacity also recorded steady growth.

Globally, renewable energy accounted for 49.4% of total installed power capacity in 2025. India’s rapid progress highlights its growing role in the global clean energy transition, particularly amid uncertainties in fossil fuel markets due to geopolitical tensions.
