Indian Bank Raises USD 400 Million Through GIFT City Branch

Indian Bank has raised USD 400 million through its branch at GIFT City, Gujarat, strengthening its foreign currency funding capabilities and expanding its international banking operations.

The fund mobilisation reflects the growing importance of GIFT City as an international financial hub and highlights Indian banks’ efforts to access global markets, diversify funding sources and support cross-border financial activities.

GIFT City’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) has emerged as a strategic platform for Indian and global financial institutions to undertake international transactions, including banking, insurance, capital market and financial services activities.

The USD 400 million fund raise will enhance Indian Bank’s ability to support international business requirements, including trade finance, foreign currency lending and other cross-border financial services.

Foreign currency funding provides banks with additional flexibility in managing liquidity requirements and supporting customers engaged in global trade and investment activities.

For banks, accessing international funding markets requires strong risk management frameworks. Institutions need to carefully manage foreign exchange risk, interest rate risk, liquidity risk and regulatory compliance requirements.

The growth of international banking operations through GIFT City also reflects India’s ambition to develop a globally connected financial ecosystem. The IFSC framework provides opportunities for Indian institutions to compete in international financial markets.

Technology and digital infrastructure are expected to play an important role in supporting cross-border banking operations. Banks need robust systems for transaction processing, cybersecurity, compliance monitoring and risk management.

The expansion of foreign currency activities also increases the importance of treasury risk management. Banks must maintain effective frameworks for managing currency movements, market volatility and funding exposures.

For Indian corporates, stronger international banking capabilities can improve access to global financial solutions, including foreign currency financing, trade-related services and international investment support.

The development highlights the changing role of Indian banks as they expand beyond domestic operations and participate more actively in global financial markets.

As GIFT City continues to grow as an international financial centre, increased participation from Indian banks is expected to strengthen India’s position in global finance while creating new opportunities for cross-border financial services.
