India Nears Universal Banking Coverage
India has moved close to achieving universal banking coverage, with 99.92% of inhabited villages now having access to a banking outlet within a 5-km radius. Out of 6,01,328 inhabited villages, as many as 6,00,868 villages are covered by the formal banking network.
The expansion reflects the combined impact of physical banking infrastructure, Business Correspondent networks, digital platforms and financial inclusion initiatives implemented over the past decade.
India’s banking network now includes more than 1.81 lakh bank branches, 17.36 lakh Business Correspondents (BCs) and around 1.65 lakh India Post Payments Bank centres, significantly extending access to formal financial services in rural and underserved areas.
A major contributor to this expansion has been the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). The number of Jan Dhan accounts has reached approximately 58.77 crore, with total deposits of around ₹3.12 lakh crore.
Several policy and technology initiatives have supported the expansion of banking coverage. The JAM Trinity — Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and Mobile — has helped connect bank accounts with identity and mobile infrastructure, facilitating financial inclusion and Direct Benefit Transfers.
The Business Correspondent model has further extended banking services to areas where establishing full-fledged branches may not be commercially viable. India Post Payments Bank has also played an important role in last-mile banking by leveraging the country’s extensive postal network.
The Jan Dhan Darshak App, a GIS-based platform, has been used to map banking access points and identify underserved areas. The Reserve Bank of India has also allowed banks greater flexibility in opening branches, subject to the requirement that 25% of new branches are opened in unbanked rural centres.
Digital platforms are also being used to improve access to agricultural and government-supported credit. The Jan Samarth Portal provides a digital interface for government-sponsored credit schemes, while the Kisan Rin Portal facilitates Aadhaar-based verification for Kisan Credit Card-related processes.
Alongside expanding access, attention is increasingly turning towards the security of digital banking. Measures highlighted include the India Digital Payment Intelligence Corporation (IDPIC) for AI-based fraud detection and the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal and 1930 helpline for reporting cyber financial frauds.
The near-universal geographic reach of banking represents a major milestone for financial inclusion. The next challenge will be to ensure that access translates into meaningful usage of savings, credit, insurance, pension and digital payment services, particularly among rural and financially vulnerable households.
