$6 Billion IDBI Deal Signals Strong Global Appetite for India
The proposed sale of a controlling stake in IDBI Bank to Canada’s Fairfax Financial Holdings for nearly $6 billion is emerging as an important signal of growing foreign investor interest in India’s financial-services sector. Fairfax is set to acquire a 60.7% stake in IDBI Bank, marking one of the country’s largest financial-sector transactions in recent years.
The deal comes amid increasing interest from global financial institutions seeking greater exposure to India’s rapidly expanding economy. Overseas investments in India’s financial-services industry reached approximately $20.5 billion in 2025, according to Bloomberg data cited by The Economic Times.
Other global players are also exploring opportunities. Blackstone is reportedly considering an investment in IIFL Finance, while Japan’s Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group is studying options to eventually acquire majority control of Shriram Finance. The developments indicate growing foreign appetite for Indian lending, wealth management and broader financial-services opportunities.
India’s expanding middle class, rising incomes, rapid digital adoption and growing demand for credit and financial products are supporting this interest. At the same time, Indian lenders have reported strong lending growth and non-performing loans are at decadal lows, according to the report.
The IDBI transaction also comes against the backdrop of banking-sector reforms that have reduced the number of state-owned banks from 27 to 12 since 2019. The transaction could therefore become an important reference point for future consolidation, strategic investments and foreign participation in Indian banking.
