Barclays Eyes India IPO Boom as Equity Markets Recover

Barclays is looking to strengthen its equity capital markets (ECM) business in India as activity in the country’s initial public offering (IPO) market shows signs of renewed momentum. The British banking group sees India as an important long-term opportunity as companies increasingly turn to public markets to raise capital.
According to the report, Barclays plans to rebuild its India ECM operations by adding bankers and capital, complementing its existing capabilities in areas including financing, mergers and acquisitions and corporate banking. The bank sees equity capital markets as a key missing component of its India investment banking franchise.

India has remained one of the world’s active markets for IPOs and other equity fundraising. A stronger pipeline of new listings and share sales could provide global investment banks with opportunities to generate underwriting and advisory revenues.

Barclays’ planned expansion also reflects increasing international interest in India’s capital markets, supported by growing corporate fundraising requirements and deeper participation from domestic and global investors.
For investment banks, the opportunity extends beyond IPOs to follow-on offerings, qualified institutional placements and other equity transactions. Stronger ECM capabilities can allow banks to serve companies across multiple stages of their capital-raising journey.

The move indicates that global banks are positioning themselves for sustained growth in India’s equity markets as companies increasingly use market-based financing to support expansion and investment.
