RBI Policy Outlook: Market Focus Shifts from Rate Hikes

The Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy decision is being closely watched not only for the expected 25-basis-point rate hike, but also for signals on the future direction of monetary policy. According to an analysis by Latha Venkatesh, the market had already priced in a rate increase, with attention shifting towards how the RBI communicates its assessment of inflation and subsequent policy action.

Market indicators were already reflecting expectations of tighter policy. The one-month overnight indexed swap (OIS) rate stood at 5.55% on October 6, compared with an average of 5.25–5.30% during July–September. The 10-year bond yield had also risen by around 25 basis points since September 1 and approximately 48 basis points since the August policy.

Inflation pressures are another concern. September CPI inflation was expected to accelerate to 5.6%, while July–September inflation was tracking around 4.9%, above the RBI’s earlier 4.7% forecast. Rising global yields and narrowing growth and inflation differentials could also influence capital flows.

The RBI’s communication on second-round fuel-price effects, future real interest rates and liquidity-management measures is therefore expected to be critical for markets.
