HSBC and Google Cloud Partner to Accelerate AI in Banking

HSBC has entered into a multi-year strategic partnership with Google Cloud to develop and deploy artificial intelligence capabilities across its global operations, with a focus on customer personalisation, financial crime prevention and employee productivity. (HSBC)

The partnership is expected to support more than 200 new AI use cases over the next two years. HSBC estimates these initiatives could generate more than $100 million in benefits, either through additional revenue or wider efficiency improvements. The new use cases will build on HSBC’s existing technology footprint, which already includes more than 600 applications running on Google Cloud. (HSBC)

HSBC will work with teams from Google Cloud and Google DeepMind and will gain access to Google’s latest agentic AI capabilities, including Gemini models. The collaboration is intended to accelerate HSBC’s shift towards AI-enabled ways of working while identifying the highest-value AI initiatives for investment and implementation. (HSBC)

The programme will initially concentrate on three major areas.

Hyper-personalised wealth management will use AI-driven insights alongside the expertise of relationship managers to provide customers with more proactive, tailored financial support and real-time advice.

Financial crime risk management will incorporate generative AI and agentic AI to help identify risks earlier. HSBC currently monitors nearly one billion transactions every month for signs of financial crime and expects the new technology to enable intervention approximately twice as fast when risks are detected. (HSBC)

The third area will focus on AI-empowered employees. HSBC plans to expand an AI-powered decision assistant already being used by thousands of employees. According to the bank, the tool has reduced administrative work and preparation time for client meetings from hours to minutes. (HSBC)

HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhedery said AI has the potential to deliver personalised customer experiences in real time and at scale, while emphasising that human judgement, decision-making and accountability will remain central to the bank’s approach. (HSBC)

The partnership illustrates how major global banks are increasingly moving beyond experimental AI projects towards large-scale deployment across core banking activities. For HSBC, the initiative combines customer-facing applications with risk management and internal productivity, while maintaining its stated focus on responsible and ethical AI adoption.
